To the Editor,

Well, I hope you have your favorite dressing on hand, as this might be construed by some as more word salad, but I will avoid mixing in words you might need a dictionary for.Grant, I want to thank you for what you do and for providing this platform for discourse. I appreciate your unbiased, independent approach. As an elected official, I am “fair game,” and everyone is entitled to their opinion. The decisions that all elected officials make should be watched and, at times, questioned. However, twisting facts, stating half-truths, and cherry-picking data to match a political motive is unfortunate. You can interpret the OHV survey however you want, but the underlying truth of it will remain the same. The voters of Hinsdale County are nearly equally divided on the Highway Program, period. I will sit down with anyone at their convenience and go over every page of all four subsets of the survey. But to be honest, the “survey results” are less important than the individual responses and sentiments I hear when speaking with people. It has been my goal to maintain an OHV Highway program that is acceptable to the majority of our residents. That means finding a balance and making adjustments as needed. (Please see my OHV ad in this week’s paper for clarification on my position).Using my public comments during the OHV Highway Program meetings to portray me as the “anti-OHV” candidate is incorrect, a blatant lie, and a personal attack that I must address. During those meetings, my intent was to address the complexities surrounding the OHV program, driven by genuine concern and a commitment to finding a balanced solution for all of my constituents. Yes, I raised questions about shortening the program by removing September, and yes, I agreed with my fellow commissioners that this change would be detrimental. Through much discussion and unanimous approval, the decision to shorten the program at the beginning of the season was reached. The purpose of BOCC workshops is to provide the commissioners time to work together publically to find solutions that accommodate diverse perspectives. As elected officials, we are tasked with representing all those whom we serve.Where we are currently is a result of making adjustments. The obviously politically motivated attempt to cast me as the sole architect of the decisions that were made, and the candidate looking to end the OHV Highway program, is just not true. As with the survey results, I will sit down with anyone at their convenience and watch the Zoom recordings of our BOCC meetings. As I have stated before and is evident in our actions, the current Board of County Commissioners works well together and is a team. Robert should be commended for the work he does, and my respect and appreciation for him has only grown over the years we have worked together. That also holds true for Kristie. She pours her heart and soul into this job and makes decisions based on logic and with a vision for the future of our county. While attempting to discredit or tear me down might play well to some, it will ultimately fail. The positive things we are doing as a county will outweigh the negative. The success we have as a BOCC will be greater than the setbacks. So, continue to exercise your right to free speech and advocate for what you think is best, but if you prefer the direct approach, my door is always open. Literally, I haven’t locked my front door in 25 years. Respectfully,Greg LevineCounty Commissioner, District 1809 N. Silver St. #[email protected]@gmail.com

Dear Friends of the Curry Campaign for House District 58 –

Here is an update on the House District 58 race. Things are still up in the air as far as who I am running against! According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, Larry Don Suckla is beating Mark Roeber by 3 votes (no this isn’t a typo!). There will be an automatic recount which has to be completed by July 30th. That means each of the eight county clerks in the district will be recounting the ballots. Historically recounts don’t usually change the vote outcomes but with the numbers being so close it is hard to predict. My campaign is going full steam while my opponents are in limbo. I have been traveling the district to attend events and talk to voters – from Norwood to Paonia to Dove Creek to Ouray. My goal is to reach out to all of the voters in the district – 47% of them are unaffiliated – to get my message out. I am stressing the fact that I have experience at the Capitol, I know how to get things done, and that I am policy and solution oriented in my approach.I am really looking forward to the events coming up – I will have a float in the Cattlemen’s Days2024 Member parade in Gunnison on July 13th, and will be attending events in Montrose, Nucla, Lake City, Olathe, Delta, and Crawford in the next several weeks. With the help of my campaign team we are hard at work preparing ads, distributing signs, preparing mailings and literature drops, and reserving radio and print media spots. I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement and ask that you forward this email to others that you think might be interested in the campaign! Sincerely,Kathleen CurryGunnison

Dear Editor,

With an increased focus on home electrification to improve energy efficiency and decrease carbon emissions, GCEA wishes to remind our members of the many rebates and on-bill repayment program we offer to help make weatherization and electric appliance upgrades possible. We recognize that many GCEA members have a desire to reduce emissions through home improvements but lack the upfront capital required to make these projects a reality. If you are looking to upgrade your windows and doors or install a heat pump or EV charger, these programs help you save money upfront and pay off the balance over time with a line item added to your monthly GCEA electric bill. Through GCEA’s partnership with Tri-State Generation & Transmission, Colorado Clean Energy Fund, and Zero Homes, we are helping homeowners receive free energy assessments and guidance on what eligible measures meet their budget and energy goals. To learn more, visit https://www.gcea.coop/electrify-and-save/ or call (970) 641-3520. Kind regards,Alliy SahagunGunnison County Electric Association (GCEA)

Newly Official RK Plumbing Solutions Offers Quality Plumbing Services

by Shannon Squires The smell of coffee brewing in the morning, a hot shower after working out, the satisfaction of scrubbing garden dirt out from under one’s fingernails… What do these soul warming activities have in common?   They all require easy access and control of water, which in turn requires the modern magic of indoor plumbing. To produce and maintain the safe aquatic systems that we are accustomed to relying on for our homes and businesses we depend on competent and qualified plumbers.   Especially in America, where the average household uses over three hundred gallons of water per day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their April 3, 2024, Watersense article on the subject. For current data on water use in the United States, the EPA’s article can be found at www.epa.gov/watersense/how=we=use-water, however the summary is that we use hundreds of millions of gallons every year as a nation.   This reliance on water and the complicated systems that move it from place-to-place required plumbers and lots of them from the very earliest stages of American history, with some plumber’s unions forming as early on as the 1870s.   Unfortunately, in modern America, there is now a shortage of plumbers and this deficit is predicted to continue. The United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics expects a downward trend in the number of qualified plumbers and pipefitters available nationwide, with tens of thousands of new vacancies in the profession every year. The National Association of Homebuilders’ claims that currently there are half as many qualified plumbers available for work as there are jobs which require their services. In underserved areas, home and business owners may wait months for plumbing services.   Not so in Lake City, Colorado, where we are fortunate to have Ron Hearon and Felisa Kay Chaloupek (Kay) of recently officialized RK Plumbing Solutions, LLC.   RK Plumbing Solutions, LLC entered the Lake City contracting scene in April of this year, when Ron achieved his Master Plumber’s and Plumber’s Contracting licenses after many years of working for large plumbing companies in the Alamosa and Boulder areas.    Ron is originally from Louisiana but was working in Southeast Texas when he met his partner Kay in the early 2000s. The pair began moving west as a couple, living in Alamosa and Boulder, where Ron began his plumbing career and fell in love with the Rocky Mountains.    Lake City likely has Kay’s long family relationship with the Wagon Wheel Cabins to thank for the couple’s placement here in town. Kay’s mother and grandmother managed the Wagon Wheel, as Kay herself does today, and Kay has lived in or spent summers in Lake City since she was a child.   At present, Kay divides her time between taking care of Wagon Wheel guests, rooms and property, and managing the administrative duties of RK Plumbing, LLC.   At the time of interview for this article, Ron and Kay are inside of an unfinished duplex on Gunnison Avenue, next to the Mountaineer Theater. Ron has done the new construction plumbing for the unit. Clean lines of interior piping shine in the recesses of two by four framing.   The site is tidy and well on its way to completion. The couple stand together for pictures in one of the building’s alcoves, both are easy-going and talkative, with smiles that come easily as they discuss their life in Lake City and the work they both do here.   Ron and his RK Plumbing, LLC are busy year-round, and he employs an assistant, long time local Parker Tuttle.   Parker has worked in construction in Lake City since he was a teenager before pursuing formal training in plumbing which continues under Ron. The two of them take on all sorts of projects including new construction, commercial, kitchen and bathroom installations and remodels, as well as being available to Lake City residents for emergency plumbing work.   Additionally, RK Plumbing, LLC provides complete winterization services.   Ron’s favorite projects involve new construction and large commercial jobs where deadlines and rapid attention to detail are required. In Lake City he does it all, and currently has a full calendar, although he is still taking projects.   Kay prefers to schedule new RK Plumbing, LLC jobs a few weeks in advance in order to accommodate on-going work. However, RK Plumbing, LLC is available for urgent plumbing concerns.   While Ron has worked as far afield as Gunnison, he prefers to remain local to Lake City and immediate surrounds, regularly going as far as the Blue Mesa area when needed.   Interested parties with questions about current or future plumbing work should contact the company at (970) 508-1698 or by email at [email protected].
