On Saturday, October 5, Hinsdale County Chamber of Commerce hosts their annual salute to fall, the German-inspired Oktoberfest, and according to Chamber Executive Director Kate Hopson, this year the event is not to be missed, as they have ramped things up significantly.
Gates at Town Park open at noon, and new this year, attendees will enjoy live music from Camillo and the Primetime Band, who hail from Broomfield, Colorado, and primarily play at Oktoberfests around the state. Their specialty is live German music and polka, but they also sing a variety of cover hits through decades of American popular music, including rock, country, blues and disco.
Festival-goers can participate in a variety of family games and Oktoberfest competitions for youth and adults alike, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with the stein-holding competition. At 2:00 p.m., the Hammerschlagen competition begins, in which hammer and nails are supplied, and in timed competitions, the nails are quickly driven into the end of a log.
A second stein-holding competition begins at 3:00 p.m., and there will be costume judging for best dressed at 3:30.
At 4:30 p.m., the brawn of festival attendees will be tested in the log toss competition, and Lake City’s 2024 strongest man, woman and child will be crowned. Prizes for the various competitions will include what Hopson calls “Oktoberfest swag,” including free beer and food, t-shirts and beer steins; for the log toss competition, trophies will be awarded to winners.
