Editor:

Over the winter months as things slowed down and I took on more responsibilities within the Sheriff’s Office, I observed that my professional, ethical, and legal based values did not align with those of the current Sheriff.
As a result, I tendered my resignation from my post as a Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy effective 11 March, 2026.
I plan to continue to reside in Hinsdale County, operate my various businesses, and continue my campaign for the Office of Hinsdale County Sheriff.
Though it is incredibly disheartening to leave a job that I love in the most beautiful county in Colorado serving a wonderful community that has accepted me with open arms, I am excited by the opportunity to more freely share the bright future I have planned for the Office.
I did not come to this decision lightly, and resisted multiple advisements by the Assistant District Attorney to resign previously, but regrettably have presently identified it as the best method to preserve my Honor so that I can serve the residents and visitors of Hinsdale County in 2027 and beyond as your Sheriff.

With deepest regrets, yet hopeful of a positive future,
Dan Strausbaugh
Lieutenant, US Navy, (Ret.)
