An essential service is defined as a public or private operation that is vital to the health, safety, and/or well-being of the population. The services they provide cannot be eliminated or reduced without negative public impact. In order for these services to exist they must be funded.
It makes sense to me that the individuals drawing upon these services pay their proportionate share. Did you know that 99% of all Hinsdale County Search and Rescue (HCSAR) calls over the last 5 years were for visitors to the area and that over half of Hinsdale County Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) calls in 2024 and 2025 to date were also for visitors to the area?
Voting YES on 1A will ensure that these essential “first responder” services provided by the aforementioned organizations continue at their current levels and visitors pay their fair share.
Voting YES on 1A will also result in a shift in funding that better aligns revenue and expenses based upon usage, ultimately reducing the funding obligations of these essential services from local residents and property owners to visitors.
